About this property

Secluded hamlet over lake and mountain, flocks of lambs and dams, stunning views

The ancient Irish name of this farmhouse hamlet is “Barralach”, meaning “over the lake”. Caragh lake is one of Ireland’s most beautiful, lying in a special area of conservation. Barralach enjoys spectacular views over the lake and up to the dramatic peaks of the Macgillycuddy Reeks or mountains. This secluded hamlet is nevertheless close to the hikers’ Kerry Way and only ten minutes from the shops and pubs of Glenbeigh village. Three of the cottages provide separate accommodation for the different elements of your party, with privacy and independence. The 14-seater dining table, however, and the great wood stoves in the very spacious Main Cottage bring the entire group joyfully together. Our guidebooks and maps ensure you make the most of your outings from Barralach. And if the weather turns inclement, the large assortment of wellington boots, raincoats and extensive collections of books, videos and games will keep you going. Immersed in nature, you will delight in Barralach’s mountain sheep, hares, rabbits, weasels, birds & magically ever-changing views, not to forget the cuckoo every April/May. You’ll love our crystalline deep-spring water. Our housekeeper may be available to provide excellent meals of the finest local fare "a la Barralach”.

BEDROOM LAYOUT OF BARRALACH COTTAGES.

Barralach is a small mountain hamlet, consisting of 4 cottages close together in the traditional Irish way. Three of these cottages, internally modernised, are available for occupation by visitors and provide accommodation for a maximum of 12 persons (11 adults and one infant), as follows:

The MAIN COTTAGE has one bedroom (upstairs) with a King size bed, 200 by 160 cm, described as “extremely comfortable”.
Beside the bedroom there is a full bathroom with bath, separate shower and
toilet.  This cottage also has a separate toilet downstairs, easily accessible to occupants of the other two cottages.  Also in this main cottage are kitchen, lounge and dining room, boot room, utility room, and two large wood stoves, for which there is unlimited free firewood, grown on our property, therefore carbon neutral.

The MIDDLE COTTAGE has two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two single beds.  It has a full bathroom with bath, separate shower and toilet.

The double bed in this cottage is also King Size, but its dimensions are 200 by 153 cm.  There is also a baby’s cot.

The LAKE COTTAGE has two bedrooms, one with two single beds of extra-large dimensions (200 by 90 cm). [If bound together, these two single beds may become a third double bed]. The other bedroom has a bunk bed set, also 200 by 90 cm, as well as a single bed. [As you will note this cottage can accommodate up to 5 persons]. This cottage also has a bathroom with shower and toilet, but no bath.

BEDDING SUMMARY. In normal configuration, the Barralach cottage complex offers two double beds, seven single beds and one baby’s cot. Thus there are beds for 11 adults and one infant.

WiFi is available in all of the cottages.

This layout permits you to allocate cottages to discrete groups of people or families.  At the same time, the entire group will want to come joyfully together in the Main cottage to enjoy the large social areas.

Oh the view!
This was the perfect location for our families trip to county Kerry. Close to the ring of Kerry, Dingle peninsula, and Kilarney. The three cottage set up was also great for multi-family accommodations. Finally, I cant say enough about the view! We would 100% stay here again.

6 Nights at Barralach
Peter said words would not do the views from the house justice, and he was right - simply stunning. We were able to access different hiking options of varying difficulty directly from the property. The house and cottages were comfortable and very well equipped. We had not realized the bedroom space in the main house was not fully enclosed as a separate room, but it was fine nonetheless. An earlier reviewer recommended renting a small SUV for the stay, and I am glad I followed that advice as the driveway up to the house is by necessity steep and also a bit rough. Restaurants, shops and water activities were 20 minutes away by car. Peter and Eliza, the housekeeper, were readily accessible by phone. The dishwasher happened to break during our stay, and Eliza quickly facilitated a replacement. All in all, a unique and lovely property to which we would gladly return.

Attractive and comfortable cottages in an outstandingly beautiful location
This was a perfect place to celebrate our wedding anniversary/birthday with all our family. The three cottages made ideal accommodation for ourselves, our son and daughter and their families, and we all appreciated the outstandingly beautiful views and walks from the cottages as well as the proximity to Glenbeigh and the amazing beach at Rossbeigh. The three cottages were very comfortable and the main cottage very well equipped. There was also the bonus of having Betty to cook for us on a couple of evenings. One family was rather concerned about their car’s low clearance on the final rather rough track to the cottage, but the rest of us coped well. Peter, the owner, was extremely helpful providing much useful information and answering questions immediately from the time of booking throughout our stay. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same for Vrbo who provided last minute information some of which was outdated regarding electricity. Peter confirmed there is no extra charge for electricity.

Beautiful views with rustic charm
We stayed in this property as a family with eight people aged 2 months to 62 years old. First the pros: The property is in an idyllic setting with magnificent views overlooking the hills and lake, and we saw the most beautiful rainbows nearly every day. It was fun to see the sheep and lambs grazing just outside the windows. The main cottage had comfortable furnishings, and the kitchen was well stocked. The main cottage also had a nice communal space for family dinners as well as for relaxing and enjoying the view together. It was also nice to have 3 separate cottages. This worked well for our extended family. Also, Peter was very responsive and easy to work with. The cons: The cottages were somewhat musty. Several family members with mold allergies had issues with this. The lake cottage was buggy - there were water bugs on the floor and a slug in one of the beds. There were also many, many flies buzzing around in the main cottage when we first arrived. It took us a few days to finally eradicate all of them. This was likely an anomaly due to the recent long drought though. Finally, with sheep comes sheep poop. We had to step very carefully to avoid it. These negatives aside, overall we really enjoyed our stay.

Gorgeous Holiday Escape
Our family stayed at the farm for a week and it was absolutely magical. We had four adults, two kids, and a toddler with us, and there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out with extra space. It is perfectly situated for adventuring around the Ring of Kerry - we were easily able to visit several of the nearby towns, all within an hours drive or less. The nearby town of Killorglin was very cute and accessible for groceries as well as some great restaurant recommendations by our host, Peter. Rossbeigh Strand, the nearby beach, was a beautiful and quiet little spot. The property itself was gorgeous and felt like being in a fairytale - three small cottages with sheep all around, and a green forest backdrop. The kitchen was fully equipped and the wood stove was lovely to sit by, even during our summer trip, while we watched the sheep just on the other side of the floor-to-ceiling windows that make up the main house. The kids loved the hike up the back hill behind the cottages that offered the most amazing views we had ever seen - a panoramic dream of mountains, the bay, lakes, and hills all captured in one quick hike. Peter was a wonderful host and was readily available whenever we needed. He was kind and friendly and had great recommendations. We would recommend staying here to anyone, and hope to be back someday.
