A perfect launch site for Sapelo
Lucy and Mike have provided a well-appointed, comfortable (the bed and linens are amazing), and extremely clean apartment with everything we needed to cook, relax and explore the complex beauty of Sapelo Island. We found deserted beaches, beautiful sandy roads that led to historic sites, extraordinary marine research facilities, beautiful lanes to marsh channels, kind folks, great beach bikes and a vehicle with which to explore it all -- and most importantly, an introduction to the Geechee people who have carved the history of this island. Lucy is a wealth of information about Sapelo Island and she has stocked a library of books that provided cultural and ecological background for all we saw. This is the perfect launch site for a trip to Sapelo.
No Stress, No Worry, Island Time
My husband and I enjoyed our stay so much; Lucy and Mike are so accommodating, friendly and just great folks. The island, accessible only by ferry, is like going back in time. No restaurants, no traffic lights, one small store, no pollution, no stress. The retreat is kinda like an upstairs tiny house, with a nice size bedroom and everything you need! The kitchen had all the stuff I had at home! We were given a Jeep to drive around the island and a cart to load up the beach chairs, and cooler. The beaches we’re pristine and you could gather many nice shells and sand dollars; beautiful sunrise. I would recommend anyone who wants to get away from it all to go there, leave your “fancy vacation” ideals at home. Remember that everything you bring with you, you will carry down a dock and load onto the passenger ferry.
Great place to stay on Sapelo Island
I took my 8-year-old daughter to Sapelo Island for an end of summer trip. Hosts Lucy and Mike are wonderful. They are full of helpful information regarding Sapelo Island. The apartment is as described, very clean, and perfect for exploring Sapelo Island. The hosts give you a vehicle to use, which is great and better than a golf cart (faster). Sapelo is a true natural beauty. Will visit the island again.
A magical family getaway ("Goin' Dialin'!)
We had an absolutely fabulous visit to Sapelo Island! What a beautiful place that we had never heard of before, and now can't wait to get back to. Mike and Lucy were perfect hosts. They welcomed us into their home and we instantly felt like we were part of the family and had known them forever. They are a wealth of knowledge, and so sweet and considerate, even occasionally running little things up to us that they knew we'd need or appreciate. Their upstairs apartment is clean, cozy and perfect (even for a family of 6!). We loved the deck, with morning coffee time watching all of the hummingbirds and painted buntings, and evenings listening to the enthusiastic frogs. The island is a treasure: huge empty beaches where our 4 kids could catch their own bait and fish all day or beachcomb up and down for miles, looking for sea turtles and sand dollars (so many!), watching dolphins, sharks and tarpon all just a few feet away - truly magic. The bikes were a big hit, enabling the kids' independence to ride across the island to count gators and roseate spoonbills in the ponds or look for wild hogs along some of the old roads. One of our favorite memories about this visit was the sound of silence - just the woods, the wind, the ocean- it was so relaxing and something that we greatly treasured during our stay. We have to give a shout-out to the delicious meals we enjoyed thanks to Barbara and Chris Bailey. Dinner on the pavilion at Nanny Goat Beach is highly recommended. We also enjoyed a couple of dinners at the apartment - all of us happy, cozy and content after a full day's adventures. We all miss this beautiful island very much and it is now one of our treasured places. Our kids still remind us on an almost daily basis: "We're going to go back to Sapelo, right?" - can't ask for a better review than that. Thank you Mike and Lucy, we'll be back!

Best vacation ever again!
My family has stayed with Miss Lucy for 6 summer vacations. Sapelo never disappoints! We love it here!
My Sapelo Retreat is on Sapelo Island which is 4 1/2 mi. from the mainland. On the Island there is only 1 small convenience store and a post office. Several of the things I have commented on are in the historic fishing village of Darien, a frequent overnight before the trip over to Sapelo. The restaurants I've commented on are in Darien and there is a fine gourmet wine and cheese store and wine bar there, Waterfront Wine and Gourmet on the waterfront on Broad Street. Some types of activities require hiring a guide, deep sea fishing, kayaking, scuba diving but I can connect you with the folks who do those things. Just ask! I'll be glad to answer your questions.
