Why Kate or Dinah chose Camaiore
International sculptor Fiore de Henriquez was living in the area of Camaiore from the 1960's due to its proximity to the Carrara marble quarries and the bronze foundries of nearby Pietrasanta. In the 1970's she found the small hamlet of Peralta, perched on the hillside above Camaiore. It was remote, served only by a footpath, and the buildings were mainly in ruins - their inhabitants having left in the mid 1950's due to the hard living in the hills. No water nor electricity at this time. Fiore fell in love with the hamlet and managed to gradually buy the various houses. She then set about restoring them and the hamlet and created the very unique place that exists today. She died in 2004 and the hamlet was then taken over by a very good friend of her's who is the current owner. . Repairs and renovations are undertaken where necessary, but the essential essence of the hamlet remains the same as when Fiore was alive. It is the home of her archive and sculptures, which can be seen throughout the grounds and in the various accommodation.
What makes this Apartment unique
It is hard to describe the absolute charm and beauty of Peralta and why I am so passionate about it. I now own it and am as much in love with it as Fiore before me. Every corner has its surprises, small details to delight the eye. The wisterias and bougainvilleas offer vibrant colour and essential shade. The views are wonderful, changing with the light, with the weather, with the season. Sunsets are magic. Early morning mist lying in the valley. The sight of Corsica on a clear day. The large bronze sculpture of 'The Phoenix' on the main terrace about to fly off over the valley. Fiore used to say it signifies 'Peralta rising from the ashes'. The many sculptures Fiore left for visitors to enjoy on the terraces. Her private gallery which I love to show to guests and one evening a week, at aperitivo time, I invite any guests staying at Peralta to a viewing of the gallery and Fiore's original house I hope many visitors will find their way to Peralta and enjoy it as much I do ......... possibly even fall in love with it! Authentic Italian experience in the Tuscan hills!
We absolutely loved Peralta! Rustic stone paths & stairs nestled in the hillside, beautiful vistas, & a private patio with grapevine entwined above us ..... a perfect combination! This felt like such a magical & authentic Tuscan experience & we felt ourselves relax immediately in the quiet & peacefulness! The salt water pool set at the top of the property provided the best view of all & we enjoyed an enchanting sunset swim, overlooking the valley, with the pool all to ourselves!
Yes, a small car is a must! Making our way up & down the windy road to the complex was exciting & a little tense at first (got easier each time ) but will become a part of our dinner party story telling for years to come! We stopped for groceries first (as suggested/directions provided) & enjoyed making a couple leisurely pasta, steak & wine dinners together!
Peralta is the real deal! When asked what was our favorite of our trip to Tuscany, it ranks at the top! You will not be disappointed!
Thank you so much. Hope to see you back soon. Kate
Lovely place tucked away in the hills
Had a great time - thanks so much. A great, tranquil base with amazing views for exploring Tuscany and Liguria. Also loved the fireplace in the apartment. We'll ned have to come back to also explore the walks in the local area!
One small improvement suggestion: Wifi could be more stable.
Thank you very much for your review. Happy you have enjoyed your stay . We will try to make the wifi better for next time.
My Great Escape
I have just come back home from an amazing place nestled in the hills of Tuscany, Italy, called Peralta. What a wonderful get away - tranquil beauty, peace and quiet. I traveled solo for three weeks in March and didn't really know how everything would go. From the very first day it was SO much more than I expected. The beauty, the service, the people. Kate, the care taker of the Villa, went out of her way to make sure I was well taken care of and really enjoyed her place in the villa. Thank you so much Kate for everything!
Peralta is a villa (almost Castle) overlooking the hills and valleys and small local town Camaiore (their Pasticceria Rossano's pastries are the best!) There's a big olive garden and lots of trees, like orange, lemon and bay. Lots of wild and planted flowers around the property. Many paths to take to enjoy the nature around. A lot of thought and work was put into this real old world villa to make it beautifully unique. The apartment I stayed at had a large kitchen and a huge fireplace. It was very clean and cozy, I felt I was living a fairytale, it was so magical and comfy. :) A few very friendly cats Pino and Bisco were looking for company and became my roommates after a while. :)
People in the area are so nice and helpful also. Though I spoke very little Italian I felt comfortable to talk to anyone I had encountered: local grocery store owners (their fresh bread, cheese and Prosciutto are amazing!), neighbors, people at the local gas station. Christopher, the gardener of Peralta, was always greeting me with a smile and eager to help with whatever I needed, just ask. Thank you Christopher!
Peralta is very close to so many other beautiful places. I had lots of day trips to places like Lucca, Piza, Cinque Terra, Siena and Florence.
Out of all the places I visited during my trip, I always couldn't wait to come back "home", in my quiet place, in touch with nature. I'm so blessed I found Peralta, especially to have a chance to get to know its people. It was hard to leave. I know I'll be back. Very soon. And I'm sure many of my friends will be visiting as well.
Beautiful location, apartment in poor condition
On the positive side, this location is beautiful and the swimming pool area is lovely.
The same cannot be said of the apartment. The bathroom has mould and the smell permeates throughout the apartment in a horrible fashion. The apartment is also filthy with cobwebs on the walls and across the ceilings and dirt on the living room floor. The bed had broken slats which were left under the bed and the sheets and towels were old and threadbare. Several things were broken in the apartment including the backdoor so it is impossible to lock.
The other thing that was a particular problem for us is the large number of animals on the property (5 dogs, 3 cats on our visit) which roam through your apartment if you don't shut the doors. They all have fleas and more importantly, you are not told this in advantage, which is a problem if you have an allergy.
All in all would not recommend this apartment.
As the owner of Peralta I was amazed and disappointed to read this review and feel it warrants a response. We have two girls who have been cleaning Peralta's accommodation for many years. They are very efficient and leave all accommodation spotless for the next guests, so I am surprised to read about cobwebs and dirt on the floor. Our various properties have authentic Tuscan tiles on the floors which sometimes have the patina of time but are never dirty. The bathroom was renovated a couple of years ago and is very new in every aspect. We pride ourselves on our pure Egyptian cotton bedlinen, laundered professionally, and we certainly do not give our guests threadbare towels.
Our beds are all very comfortable and I am surprised to read that there were lats lying under the bed.
However, it is true that the lock on the back door was broken for a very short time but quickly repaired. I am sorry that these guests must have stayed in this brief period when we were awaiting the locksmith.
As for the animals, it is also true that we have 3 cats and 1 dog (my terrier Ellie) resident at Peralta. They are all very popular with our guests who often invite them into their accommodation. Due to this, the animals have a tendency to think everyone is very happy to see them! Following this review, I will mention on our website that we do have 3 cats and a dog so people who do not appreciate animals will be forewarned. However, they certainly do not have fleas since we treat them each month with the classic anti flea treatment on the neck.
Nor do we have 5 dogs, just Ellie. Perhaps we had other guests who were staying with a dog, or a neighbour's dog strayed, although I do not remember ever seeing 5 dogs at one time.
I am very sorry that the guests who have written this review had such a negative experience at Peralta.
It is not pleasant for us to read such criticism and of course we would like all our guests to enjoy the experience of staying in the unique and beautiful hamlet of Peralta!
We had a wonderful stay at Peralta this summer, the place is just stunning ! People are so nice and welcoming, our apartment was very nicely decorated with a wonderful view on the toscan hills. Our terrace was great for breakfast or peaceful drinks at night. It is a perfect Italian summer place where you want to come back every year !
Beautiful Hilltop House, Amazing Location!
Having read the previous review of Pipistrelli I can honestly say I couldn't have had a more different experience of staying in this apartment. The house itself is a stunning example of Tuscan building, with a real homely feel. It is decorated beautifully and has a perfect little kitchen to make your morning coffee and a relaxing seating area to lounge the afternoons away after a busy time exploring Luca and the surrounding areas. Everything was spotlessly clean and I found the bed to be very comfortable, I slept so well for my entire stay. Peralta as a whole is a beautiful place, and more than just because of the buildings, the artwork dotted around the land, the very helpful and friendly staff and the animals (of which I only counted 1 dog Ellie who was very friendly and without any fleas as far as I could see!), it has an incredibly special feeling about it which stays with you long after you leave. I can only imagine the previous review was from people who didn't quite understand the magic of Peralta as I certainly would recommend (and have already done just that) this apartment to friends and family, and I can't wait to go back and visit Dinah, Kate, and the team (plus Ellie the dog) again.
Peralta is a hillside group of houses situated in the northern part of Tuscany, on the slopes of the Alpi Apuane National Park, 10 minutes from the market town of Camaiore which, in turn, is 10 minutes inland from the coast Lucca is a 35 minute drive to the south. Motorway exit is 20 mins, making day trips easy: Siena (2 hrs), Carrara & its marble mines (45 mins). You can drive into the Carrara mountains - or go to the beach - the closest is Viareggio, the most popular Forte dei Marmi (35 mins). The Cinque Terre are one hour away - one can drive to La Spezia or Porto Venere and visit them by boat - the ferry service is frequent..Shopping in the area (Lucca/Florence/Forte dei Marmi) is legendary! The sculptors' town of Pietrasanta is only 20 minutes away. Peralta is Ideally situated for the Puccini Festival (40 minutes away). - open air opera Festival taking place in July and August at Torre del Lago.
ACCESS: Airports: Pisa 45 mins - Florence 1 hr. Genoa 1 hr.40mins - Bologna 2hrs.
From the A11 and A12 motorway exit, Viareggio/Camaiore, you head for ''Viareggio' and then 'Camaiore'. We give detailed directions. Note: The last 200 or so yards of our road are very steep and narrow with 2 hairpin bends. A smallish car is recommended, although an Espace & other large cars can make it. The road comes to an end in our car park. From there you walk to Peralta itself (about 200 yards/meter). Larger cars can park below the final steep ascent - we will bring your luggage etc up to Peralta in our tri-porter vehicle (Ape). It is an easy walk from the lower parking area to Peralta.
