About Alison Patterson
After many years living in other countries teaching English we are now settled in Es Mercadal. It's a long way from home for Richard, who's from Canada, but he loves it as much as I do. We're semi-retired now but keep our hand in with some online teaching and materials writing. Mostly we enjoy living here, the walks, the cafes and restaurants and the fabulous environment.
Alison Patterson purchased this Apartment in 1999
Why Alison Patterson chose Es Mercadal
I came to Menorca on an impulse in May 1999, I arrived on a Sunday and fell in love with the Island on the Monday during an excursion to Fornells, it was chilly and misty and reminded me of the Peak District!! On Thursday I bought the flat! It was a reckless purchase, but it was one of the best things I ever did. For years during difficult times in London it was my dream and my escape. Then when I became an English teacher, I was drawn to other parts of Spain and spent a wonderful 5 years living in Barcelona. Fast forward 12 years and now we are living in Es Mercadal. Menorca has always felt like home. It casts a simple but strong spell on many people who visit it. Something I hope you will feel too.
What makes this Apartment unique
For me the flat immediately had a real positive energy about it. With the hills directly behind and the sea in front. I read many years later that the Chinese believe that this is perfect Feng Shui for a property. Naturally, all the flats in Playas de Fornells are similar in layout, but the previous owner of this flat. The electrician for the community when it was built, but in the breakfast bar and the charming arches. He also did the paintings of the boats and the countryside which are still in the kitchen and the lounge. This apartment is cool, yet cosy and comfortable. A perfect place for a holiday stay

Peaceful and stylish.
Even though our trip was in school holidays and very hot, we found the resort quiet and the apartment cool enough and airy on the beautiful balcony.Had the pool to myself most afternoons too. Alison was great, sorting a problem with the hot water immediately. Tasty treats welcome too.
Lovely week in Tamarindos
The second time we have stayed in Tamarindos. Quiet resort but enjoyed the buzz of Okapi.
Fabulous apartment with staggering view
We simply can’t rate our apartment or the complex and location it was in highly enough. Alison and Richard’s attention to detail was marvellous, a real home from home. Spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. Alison replied to my emails with my several questions before we left within an hour or so and sent us a very comprehensive description of local restaurants, beaches, towns and places of interest. So useful, we took it everywhere with us! Thank you Alison and Richard, we shall be back.
Many thanks indeed for taking the trouble to write such a kind review. We are so pleased that you found the apartment to be a "home from home". That is exactly our goal so we are delighted.
We're also really pleased you found our 'notes' useful. We know it's just our opinion, so it's great to know that our guests value it.
Thank you also, for leaving the apartment in such a fantastic condition. Our cleaning lady is very happy!! :-)
You are always more than welcome back
Alison and Richard
Overall excellent, only minor picky items. Do go!!!
Tastefully designed apartment, gorgeous tiles, balcony overlooking huge expanse of sea. There's a little back terrace with lovely flowering shrubbery - a suntrap. Balcony in shade (good in summer but we came in October). Big bedroom, massive bed and bathroom to die for. Clean and well maintained (we were there 2 weeks). Combined posh grill/microwave defeated us and we made do with two hob rings (restaurants not cheap). Concertina doors did not concertina (weather?) despite photo instructions, but we managed by opening the end bit. Big wardrobe, sit-up-and-beg breakfast bar - tiny but sweet and cleverly done. Apartment is back row, hence great views over pantile rooves to open sea. Part of newish "moorish fishing village" development which we imagine would be overflowing in summer. Go to OKAPI cocktail bar and restaurant four minutes drive away overlooking little bay. The food is very good and the staff young and dynamic. The "village" is a few minutes from the elegant Fornells resort where there are lots of bars and eateries (Some prices over the top, but we found a regular homely waterside bar -you must get Menorcan ice cream, delicious). Great clothes/jewellery shops in the old part of Fornells. Highly recommended for couples.
Many thanks indeed for your review and your kind words.
Thanks for drawing our attention to the 'concertina' doors/windows. We can see how part of the instructions are not totally clear, so we've amended them, so hopefully future guests can open the windows fully without any problems.
We may not be able to fix everything immediately, but please feel free to contact us at any time if you are stuck with anything, and we will come and explain how it works and/or try to fix it.
Yes, we like Okapi too, we've noticed that they have the same team each year, which I think says a lot for the owner!! (and all the clients!)
Fornells is something quite special and we are really pleased you enjoyed it.
Thank you for leaving the appartment so clean and tidy - you are always more than welcome back.
pretty apartment with stunning views and next to natural area
Fornells beach a lovely area to stay for peace and quiet especially for those that love natural areas. Fab beach for swimming close by and areas for walking. We will return.
Tamarindos 402 is a lovely place. We couldn't have been happier with our choice. Thanks Alison for all the great recommendations and local treats! We will be back!
The flat is located in the most peaceful of the communities of Playas de Fornells, facing out to sea. There is a sheltered pool for use of community residents only and beautiful landscaped gardens. Within Playas de Fornells are some great cafes and restaurants, both local and international cuisine, some with wonderful terraces with views of the sea or inland. There are also supermarkets if you prefer to cook at home and eat on the terrace. The nearest sandy beach, Cala Tirant, is about 15 minutes away on foot. The pretty village of Fornells is only a short and stunning walk around the headland or 5 minutes by car. 7km south of the flat is Es Mercadel, a small and unspoilt village with some of the best restaurants on the Island. Also the best bakers and coffee shops - beware the patisserie!!!!
For the first time ever I've added to this website some comments from the guest book in the flat. All these reviews, along with many others, are there for you to read.
