About Christian Bungard
Born in the UK, my family moved to Southern Spain when I was a small child, where I grew up and have spent all my life. Married to a beautiful Spanish lady and a father of two lovely bilingual children, you could almost say I am 100% Spanish myself. My job in international sales in the wine business has given me the wonderful opportunity to travel all over the world and, honestly speaking, I would say that there are only a fistful of places where life can be enjoyed so much as here. I have also travelled all over Spain, a fascinating country full of contrasts and diversity, where places like Mojácar are totally unique. I regularly live between Mijas (Málaga) and Valladolid, north of Madrid, but we try to escape to Mojácar everytime we have the chance.
Christian Bungard purchased this Apartment in 2008
Why Christian Bungard chose Mojácar
Back in 2005 we came across this project and fell in love with it. Since I visited Mojácar the first time, twenty five years ago, I felt it was like going back in time. It was the real Andalusia; bleached white houses full of blossoming buganvillas by the glittering blue sea, great food and ambience at a much lower cost than most other destinations. To this date, Mojácar hasn't changed much, remaining as authentic as it was back then and offering visitors a unique experience of what the old traditional coastal villages used to be like in the past, but with all the frills you would expect from a fun filled modern destination. Situated very near the amazing Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, the possibility to discover some of Spain's most beautiful beaches is part of the fun. This side of Andalusia is also one of the warmest and sunniest regions of all the country, pretty much assuring good weather any time of the year.
What makes this Apartment unique
Playa Macenas was conceived as a very ambitious development where several residential areas, villas, an 18 hole golf course and a 5* hotel would give life to one of Spain´s most prestigious seaside resorts. Unfortunately, the recession also had its impact here, where several projects were suspended -the hotel being one of them. Funnily enough, it may have worked to our advantage, as most of the facilities were completed yet not having to share the busy and noisy company of a large hotel. Playa Macenas is the only development next to a 1km long beach. The views are amazing. The architecture, a modern version of the traditional Eastern-Andalusian style, is extremely attractive. Autochthonous vegetation, palm trees, hanging gardens, fountains and secluded pools, are all part of what you will enjoy. Underground parking assures the streets are clear of cars. And, of course, the Beach Club with its exclusive infinity pool. For me, there are two moments of the day that are memorable; one, waking up early and watching the sun come out over the blue Mediterranean sea from either the sitting room, the terrace or even the main bedroom. And, second, breakfast and dinner on the quiet terrace, where nothing will interrupt your view from the sea or the surrounding architecture -all bellow our apartment.

Just what we wanted! Breathtaking views and tranquil atmosphere.
We wanted a relaxing holiday away from the crowds and this property was perfect. Set in a breathtaking location, with a very long quiet beach in front, breakfasts and dinners on the terrafe were wonderful. Communication with Christian, the owner, was timely and helpful. The apartment has everything you need to make your vacation perfect. Most recommendable.
Lovely relaxing and quiet, great facilities
Wonderful winter retreat under the sun :)
We stayed at this beautiful property for just over two months, between February and April. It is spacious and the views of the ocean from the living room and bedroom are spectacular. Sun facing during most of the day, we only used the central heating a couple of times. We even enjoyed breakfast on the terrace many mornings! A quiet retreat in winter, the 24h guarded entrance was comforting and walks on the beach were a must. The apartment is very well equipped and communication with the owner was easy and effective, solving any question we had promptly. Access to the underground parking space by lift was very convenient. Most recommendable. We have a wonderful time and will definitely go back.
Listing was very accurate with amazing view of the ocean. Price was very good and communication with Christian and Mojacar Estates was easy. Definitely would recommend staying at least a week in this place!
The perfect family escape
This property is situated in a wonderful complex that has a real feeling of exclusivity; well maintained, not too busy and with security at the entrance. The main pool area is spacious and clean and the bar/restaurant is friendly and welcoming and offers a good selection of snacks and meals with a great range of soft drinks, beers, wines and cocktails. A short drive or the bus takes you to the beachfront bustle of Mojacar Beach and historic Mojacar town is well worth a visit and easily reached. Not too farther afield are numerous towns and villages, all interesting in their own right.
The apartment is well appointed, clean and comfortable and provides all you need for a relaxing stay. The views from the terrace are out of this world.
Christian the owner is very accommodating and the property managers are really nice and helpful too.
We have booked for our 3rd trip this July, which should say it all!
More a Complex Rather than a Resort.
The reviews, description and (clever) photo's of this property drew me to it, and after corresponding with the friendly owner I was hooked!
I have stayed in private apartments/villas in Mojacar on two previous occasions so can subjectively measure my stay at Playa Macenas against those two visits. However, I would like to be objective first:
We arrived very late and although the complex was easy to find, when we actually got there the map/instructions provided by the rental agent gave little help! It's a bit like a concrete jungle where the apartment is located and without the very helpful security man we would have taken a lot longer to find it. The promise of a welcome pack to get us through breakfast was very 'welcome' and meant that we did not have to stop to buy any food that night. However, it was slightly disappointing to have jam and margarine but no bread to put it on!
The apartment itself was very hot as the air con was not on and when we turned it on we found it offered little comfort in the Mojacar heat; it was quite ineffective even at the lowest temperature/highest fan setting. One of the main reasons I booked the apartment was for 3 bedrooms. Maybe I read the description incorrectly but it does not really have 3 bedrooms; it has 2 and a studio room. The studio room contains just a sofa bed which was adequate although it has no bedroom furniture in. The washing machine is also housed in a cupboard in the studio room. Yes, the apartment has cable tv (7 channels - 5 German, 1 French and 1 obscure English speaking news channel) but the power cables running across the floor to the plug sockets are unsightly. Aesthetically, a very modern apartment though. One major annoyance was the constant tripping of the power, even when we were not 'overloading' it.
Subjectively, the complex (not resort!) for me is never 5*! The golf course is looking tired (water to the fairways apparently cut off) and many properties at the top end remain unbuilt. The pools were all lovely though, especially the main one, and the 2 smaller ones nearer to the apartment are handy - watch out for the many steps down/up though. The complex was very quiet (although we must have had the only noisy neighbours - music at 3am) and gives the feel that it may already be on its last legs. Car is essential as there are no shops within walking distance to get groceries etc. In hindsight, I would have liked to be closer to Mojacar.
Still, a pleasant break and friendly owner.
Since we started renting our property, 49 families have enjoyed their holidays in our apartment –reviews clearly show their level of satisfaction. However, we do apologize for disappointing this very demanding customer. All readers, please consider the following:
PHOTOGRAPHS. Every enquiry is followed by a full description of the property including a slide presentation with over 80 current images precisely to avoid “clever” pictures causing confusion.
WELCOME PACKS include sliced bread, not fresh bread unless specifically requested. A surprise bottle of Cava to greet you after a long journey is also included. In the unlikely eventuality that you don’t locate the apartment (situated immediately above the car park), as well as the instructions provided and our telephone numbers, a 24 hour security service will guide you to the front door. This is the first time that we receive a complaint about such an efficient service.
AIR CON. In 2012 summer’s worst heat wave, with temperatures reaching 45ºC, we apologize that the temperature controlled AC may have had difficulties keeping the apartment cool. It was, very sadly, our driest summer in over 100 years! So we do apologize that water restrictions were affecting the fairways.
BEDROOMS. The description clearly indicates it is a 2+1 bedrooms, specifying “Studio Bedroom - 1 Double Bed, 1 Sofa bed/Futon”, along with “Bedroom 1 - 1 Large Double Bed” and “Bedroom 2 - 2 Single Beds”. We consider this information is neither misleading or imprecise.
TV. Over 30 channels are available via the cable system. A complimentary high capacity Wi-fi device was installed, also offering the opportunity to access TV via Internet.
LOCATION. The property’s description indicates “car recommended”. “situated 1km south of Mojácar”. It is in a quiet and relaxing location and no misleading information is ever intended. Considering it was fully booked with a high occupancy, it is nice to know the resort was quiet.
Fortunately many reviews (of ours and other apartments) reflect the overall high opinion visitors have of Playa Macenas. However, we do understand everybody has their own likings for which we firmly recommend you search for a property that really matches your preferences.
In any case, we will continue to do our upmost best to assure our guests enjoy a wonderful vacation when they stay at our apartment. This is our goal.
Thank you very much for reading. Please contact us for further information.
Although a car is mostly needed to move around, there is a regular bus service between Playa Macenas and Mojacar, with stops along the Mojacar Costa area.
The area in which Playa Macenas Beach Resort is located offers a wealth of natural and cultural attractions. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park, which is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, the beautiful unspoilt beaches, truly unique and amazing, or such exceptional places as the Tabernas Desert, which is like being in another world. The desert is unique in Europe both because of its ecological diversity and because of its semi-arid climate. Sunrise and sunset in the desert, with their vivid spectrum of colours, are particularly spectacular.
In the area around Playa Macenas you can go horse riding, walking or cycling in the Sierra de Cabrera hills or the Cañada de Aguilar. Almería’s traditional gastronomy, which features an endless variety of typical dishes that combine fresh, natural products of land and sea, is a local delicacy.
Other Activities: Visiting the stunning Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar
Valle del Este, Desert Springs, and Cortijo Grande are some golf courses in the area that you can enjoy.
Ski: Check out Sierra Nevada's website to see what you can enjoy only two hours away:
I was a ski teacher in Sierra Nevada in the past, so please feel free to ask me any questions about the resort, the slopes, the ski-schools and the access. If you plan to go, be very careful with the weather forecast; in Sierra Nevada when it snows it can be well over a metre before it stops!! ;-) Remember that Pradollano, the town, is located at 2.150 mts above sea level, and Borreguiles, the central lift distribution point, is at 2.750 mts. The season starts beginning of December and ends as late as mid May, but the quality of the snow varies enormously as the winters can be quite mild at times.
