Why Hawaii Vacation Rentals chose Puako
Why Puako: The owner of this cottage purchased this home many years ago when he fell in love with Puako. He has since purchased others and updated this one to make it a charming vacation rental. There is an additional property next door which will be able to rent as well, so two families could have house side by side.

Great Beach Cottage!
The house is right across the street from excellent diving and snorkeling at Puako End of Road. The house itself is great for 5 people. Very clean, virtually no bugs or creatures, very good air conditioning throughout. WiFi worked great. Only one bath but we didn't care since everyone fought who got to use the wonderful outdoor shower next! We're going again!
Mahalo for staying at Paniau Surf Cottage! We loved having as our guests. Come back soon.
My wife and I and 2 teenagers stayed for a week in this cottage. It was perfect for us. There were 3 bedrooms (one with a king, one with a queen and one with a futon) so we had plenty of room to spread out. There are A/C units in each bedroom and one in the living room, but didn't need them much and preferred the ocean breezes.
The house is just across the road from the ocean where we got to see lots of perfect sunsets and spend afternoons walking the beach and finding sea turtles basking in the sun. There are several great sandy beaches in the area (10-20 minute drive).
The property manager and the caretaker were very responsive and checked in during the week to make sure everything was going smoothly. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Amazing to walk to such sunsets!
Lovely, tropical home. We spent a ton of time relaxing and reading on the shady lanai and then heading across the road for the sunsets. What a luxury!
Lovely stay for a family
This is our second visit to Puako, first though at this beach cottage and we loved it. We are a family of five that fit comfortably (our daughters shared a bed) in the spacious house that had good amenities and a nice layout. The property is well maintained and the owners are responsive. A woman next door helps take care of any issues that might arise and when we arrived had some nice goodies (baked goods etc.) waiting for us. The property is right across the street from the ocean and you can easily just walk across Puako drive and watch the sunset, snorkel (though the surf at times can be rough) or take a short walk to one of the local beaches or the very cool petroglyphs. My only issue is the agency that manages the bookings; after confirming our stay they were completely unresponsive to any of our e-mails and did not pick up when we tried to call them. The owners may not be aware of this but should be. We would stay at this home again, we loved it!
We are so sorry to hear that you could not reach us. We have searched our emails and have nothing from you. We also have numbers and contact information located in the home. Also, Sheila, the caretaker is right next door and stays in close touch with us as well, so I apologize profusely that you experienced no contact from us. We also attempted to leave you a message the day after you checked in. We would like to offer you a free night for you next visit. We pride ourselves in responding to our guests. Hurry back!
Wonderful beach access
We enjoyed this very comfortable property, just steps from a glorious snorkeling spot and amazing sunsets. Our host Sheila was kind and attentive, made us feel very welcome and knew the island well. Apart from the usual tropical wildlife, we had significant mouse visitors in the home, which we set traps for. Apart from the mice, the home was very well equipped, clean and comfortable. Beautiful beaches just up the road a short drive away.
We are so sorry about the mice! In the tropics we tend to have an outbreak of creatures when we have rain in the Puako desert climate. Hopefully our quick response with our pest control service and Sheila being next door to help, made you comfortable. We welcome you back anytime!
With Warmest Aloha,
Best family-friendly beach cottage
We really enjoyed our stay here at the end of Puako Beach Drive. The cottage was perfect for our family of four. Because the cottage is surrounded by forest there are many birds to watch and listen for. My kids loved seeing the geckos and occasional mongoose slinking across the road. You can hear the ocean swells at night from the bedrooms. There is a beach access right across the road for watching the sunset and swimming (when the swell isn't high). Took us a few days to find the entry point (look for the keyhole) but by observing the locals and asking questions we figured it out. The snorkelling is really good out off of the reef here. This location is perfect. You can walk south to the mega-resorts like the Mauna Lani and Fairmont Orchid, or it is a short drive north to Wailea Beach and Hapuna Beach (best boogie boarding). The towns of Waimea and Hawi are not too far away for exploring and farmer's markets. The cottage has everything you could need: well-appointed kitchen, outdoor shower, laundry, speedy internet, beach & snorkelling equipment, BBQ, quiet and calm surroundings, caretaker on site if you need help with anything. We will definitely stay here again when we come to the Big Island again.
You certainly got the spirit of this cottage! Hurry back!
Puako Beach is a charming beach community nestled between the Mauna Lani Resort and Hapuna Beach on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. Puako is still the only ocean front residential community along the Gold Coast/Kohala Coast of the Big Island nestled between the Mauna Lani Resort, Fairmont Orchid and Mauna Kea/Hapuna Resorts.
Hapuna Beach State Park, just a few minutes drive from here, has earned the reputation of being one of Hawaii Island's finest beaches. It is the largest White Sands Beach on The Big Island and consistently rates on Top Ten lists internationally. You can even drive the back road to Hapuna Beach and not get on the Highway. Local shore fisherman can be seen daily enjoying the great reef fishing. Hapuna Beach offers some wonderful opportunities for swimming during calm seas offering crystal clear water and beautiful scenery, bodysurfing, bodyboarding during periods of high surf with waves reaching 3 feet high for experts! During these high surf times there are dangerous rip currents and pounding shore breaks so those not familiar should stay out of the water. There are Lifeguard services. Sunbathing (and looking at all of the sunbathers) with limited shade, so if it's not windy, umbrellas can be seen lining the beach. Snorkeling is a favorite activity at Hapuna Beach and is just a mile from Puako. You can even drive the back road to Hapuna Beach and not get on the Highway. It is located off Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway (Highway 19, 2.3 miles south of Kawaihae Harbor and is open daily during daylight hours. There is a coastal trail called Ala Kahakai Trail that goes from Kawaihae-Anaehoomalu mostly along the coast. 61.8 acres with restrooms, picnic pavilions, picnic tables, showers, trash cans, drinking water, payphone and lifeguard services and lots of parking. In recent years there has been a beach hut cafe to purchased food.
Puako Beach Drive has no thorough thru access which keeps it virtually still undiscovered by many. Original beach shacks next to stately homes as well as charming beach cottages that some owner's have preserved. There are homes along the ocean side as well as across the street from the ocean. There are six separate 'beach' accesses along this stretch of beach. Although there is not a tremendous amount of sand, there are tide pools and the extensive protected reef is remarkable. During low tide, small pools dot the entire coastline and these pools are filled with small sea life that make excellent areas to explore for all ages. If you enjoy shore diving, kayaking and snorkeling you can find a spot along this stretch of shoreline to enter the water. Offshore the reef is home to a wide variety of fish and many days you will see dolphins playing right from the shore. Enjoy the Whales who return each year to mate and give birth in the tropical warm waters during the winter months.
Puako is a place of activity and rejuvenation. There is so much to do or nothing at all. Sunsets are celebrated by most who live and visit Puako every evening.
The views of Mauna Kea Mountain will take your breath away when you turn around to the East on a clear day. In the winter months you might have the opportunity to sit at the beach and see snow not the mountain.
Along the Kohala Coast, the Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve features more than a thousand petroglyphs, or kii pohaku, lava rock carvings etched into stone centuries ago by Native Hawaiians. Although the true meanings of the petroglyphs are unknown, it is generally thought these carvings are records of births and other significant events in the lives of the people who lived on Hawaii Island long ago.
Just a short walk to the Fairmont Orchid Hotel, Holoholokai Beach (a well manicured beach-park with facilities) and the Mauna Lani Resort, or from the South end of Puako, start at Paniau Beach and walk along the coast to the Petroglyphs and you can see the carvings of human forms, canoes, turtles and others in the captivating petroglyphs fields of Puako. Take the kids on a petroglyph hunt and ask them what they think these ancient symbols could mean. On a full moon some of has have been known to walk to the petroglyph field from the South end of Puako where the lava is so lit up from the moon that we haven't needed a flashlight. It's been said that the ancient Hawiians walked at night as it was cooler.
